'Edith Bogue' - one of the hardiest cultivars of evergreen magnolia, can withstand temperatures down to -30°C.
The leaves are stiff, elliptical, dark green on the upper side and dark rusty on the underside.
It grows up to 8m tall. The flowers are white, 20 cm or more across, with a citrus-like fragrance.
It flowers from spring onwards, lasting all summer.
Growing. The soil should be fertile, moist but well-drained, with peat added (a mixture of compost, peat and sand is ideal).
Grow the magnolia well mulched to prevent the soil from drying out.
When digging around the magnolia, be careful of shallow roots.
Avoid cutting magnolias if possible.
Pruning is generally poorly tolerated; if necessary, very young plants can be shaped immediately after flowering.
Magnolias are fully hardy to about -29°C. They flower during April and May.
