Cultivation: The dogwood is classified as a thermophilic fruit tree of calcareous soils. It is best suited to neutral or slightly alkaline soils, sunny open positions, southern, southeastern and southwestern slopes. It can also tolerate drier conditions, because it roots deeply and can secure moisture even in conditions with unevenly distributed precipitation. It only needs more moisture during the ripening of the fruits, which, depending on the season, is from August to September. It is fully frost-resistant in wood and flower. It can be successfully grown up to an altitude of 600 m. Cold locations, especially locations with frequent fog, are not very suitable for it. It also does not tolerate shading or partial shade. It requires a deeper cut, especially after planting during the period of forming the growing shape. When planting a bush, 3-5 main branches are left, which are shortened by approximately one third to one half. The cut is repeated for the first three years of cultivation. When planting a grafted plant, it is possible to grow a crown with or without a terminal (hollow crown) in a similar way to pome or stone fruits. Because the dogwood bears fruit on one-year growth, the production of which is naturally sufficient, the cut consists only in illuminating the bush or crown. In folk medicine, dogwoods are still recommended for digestive problems, especially intestinal problems, both acute (such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps) and chronic. The medicinal effects of dogwood fruits have been known since ancient times. All parts of the plant (bark, roots, shoots, fruits) can be used in this regard. The bark, roots or shoots were used, for example, against fever. The fruits can be used for intestinal diseases. Medicines made from leaves, flowers and fruits can be used to treat digestive problems, anemia, liver or kidney diseases. Fresh concentrated juice obtained from the fruits is used to treat diabetes. The concentrated juice is also used in traditional medicine to treat skin diseases. The pulp of the fruits and the oil obtained from the seeds are useful for the treatment and regeneration of damaged skin tissues. Dogwoods can also be combined with other, less valuable types of fruit. In southwestern Europe, dogwood fruits are popularly processed into compotes and preserves. Culinary interest is the use of dogwood in mixed compotes with cranberries and pears as a side dish for game. The fruits are also preserved by drying or freezing. Dried ground pulp is also sprinkled on grilled meat. A tasty tea is prepared from dried dogwood, similar to rose hips. A tasty syrup with a high vitamin content is also made from the fruits. The fruits can be pickled in alcohol, or wine or distillate can be made from it. In addition to vitamins, anthocyanins and phenolic substances, dogwood fruits also contain a high amount of acids and pectin, which affect their gelling properties. Cornelian cherry has logically been used for centuries to prepare marmalades, jelly and compote. When processed into food products, it is usually necessary to add enough sugar.
