  • Distribution: North American species found in western Canada and USA, mainly in the area of southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, in the USA in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, both Dakotas, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, California and New Mexico.
  • Ecology: Grows in light forests and scrub. Blooms from May to June.
  • Description: Dioecious deciduous shrub to small tree, 1-6 m tall, spiny. Shoots are silvery, leaves are opposite, shortly petiolate, elliptic to lanceolate, 20–50 × 7–10 mm, silvery, covered with scales on both sides, entire. Inflorescence is hollow, grape-like; the flowers reach about 4 mm in diameter, are 4-fold, yellow-brown, appear before the leaves sprout. The fruit is a berry, red or yellow, 4–6 mm, edible, bitter.
  • Threats and conservation: The species is listed as endangered in the state of Iowa.
  • Uses: Native Americans consumed fruits that contain saponins, both fresh and dried.
