- Mespilus germanica 'Süssmispel'
- A medlar with exceptionally sweet fruit, which is characterized by the highest sugar content among commonly known varieties. Thanks to the low content of tannins, the fruit is suitable for direct consumption even before freezing, before it has completely softened.
'Süssmispel' grows relatively quickly, reaching 4-5 m in height and forming a spreading crown of a similar width. Leaves typical of loquats, elongated and covered with hairs. In autumn, they acquire a very attractive yellow color. A significant advantage of medlar is its large, single, white flowers, which appear in the spring between the already developed leaves. - Requirements:
Requires fertile soil, preferably humous, permeable, with constant moderate moisture, although it tolerates short-term drought without problems. It prefers a sunny location and tolerates moderate shade. Avoid planting in areas exposed to strong winter winds and frost basins – medlar is not adapted to very low temperatures and may require protection in severe winters. - Usage:
The common medlar "Süssmispel" is grown mainly for its tasty, valuable and very attractive fruits. Recommended for home gardens, but it can also be successfully planted in parks and green areas.
