- A stout ornamental tree from the buckthorn family originally from Asia.
- The leaves are heart-shaped, 10-20 cm long.
- In June to August, it blooms with creamy to greenish flowers, in many-flowered peaks.
- The flowers smell nice. The brown fruits (stones) the size of peas are edible, taste like raisins.
- Not only the fruits are harvested, but also their stalks, which are larger and fleshy compared to the fruit and, like the fruits, resemble raisins in their sweet taste. That is why this interesting plant is called the "Japanese raisin tree". In our conditions, it grows to a height of 4-6 meters. It prefers sunny and sheltered habitats and fertile, not too wet soil.
- It is winter-hardy down to -18°C, young shoots can freeze, but the plant regenerates relatively well.
