  • All cultivars and rarer species can be vaccinated in the summer either with C. monogyna or, if there is a shortage, with C. oxyacantha. As rootstocks, we choose 1/1 with a thickness of either 6-8 mm or 8-10 mm, not older ones, because the buds on them grow well, but the grafts are weaker. We inoculate on the root collar so that the rootstock does not swell too much. We tie with tape. After the stitches have joined the base, we loosen the tape in time. In early spring, we either cut the rootstock sharply above the eye, if we have the nursery in a position protected from the winds, or we cut it to a cone, blind it and tie the grafts to it.
  • To achieve bushy shapes, we can pinch young grafts already at a height of 40 cm and force them to premature branching. C. oxyacantha "Paul's Scarlet" (syn. C. monogyna kermesina plena) grafts are best suited as rootstocks, which often reach a height of over 2 m already in the first year. At a height of 180 cm or 220 cm, we cut it to a tall trunk, or graft it a different variety. Half-trunks should be 150 cm tall in the crown.
  • We also use hawthorn rootstocks for loquats, large-fruited quinces and for cranes. Some grow better on them than on their own seedlings. It is also possible to graft Amelanchier, Photinia and Chaenomeles cultivars as saplings onto hawthorn.
  • Culture: The plant thrives best in loamy, calcareous, not very light soils and in a sunny position.
