  • This ichandarin was created by a natural cross between mandarin and ichang papeda, it comes from China, where it grows wild, it was already known 2,500 years ago, it has been cultivated in Japan for over 1,000 years, even in the colder areas of Kochi and Tokushima prefectures. 
  • Grows at an altitude of 1400 m. Shrub or medium-tall, tall, very thorny tree, leaves lanceolate, pointed, slightly serrated, winged petioles reach 1/3 the length of the blade, young shoots reddish. It tolerates temperature drops down to -18°C. 
  • Fruits flattened, pericarp greenish, yellow to orange, thicker, rough, bumpy, easy to peel, sweet, edible, used as a vegetable. The flesh is amber-yellow, soft, sour, bitter with a resinous aroma, has little juice, 11-12 segments and many seeds. 
  • Harvested from October to March, the fruits replace lemons and limes in some areas. 
  • In Japan, they make vinegar and citric acid from the juice, the fruits are used in harvest ceremonies and in a number of dishes and for decoration, it is also used in Korean cuisine. It is widely used as a rootstock in breeding for its rapid growth. 
  • It is also suitable for indoor cultivation with cold winters. 
  • It is grown in other forms, e.g. 'Kinnosu', 'N°1-754', 'Xiecheng', 'Zhenchen', which have fewer seeds. 
  • The flesh of some clones is bitter or inedible, while others have a sour, pleasant taste. 
  • It was used in Japan as a cold-resistant rootstock, but it is being replaced by poncirum and its hybrids, currently it is only used for the variety 'Tankan'.
  • The average fruit size of Yuzu N°4 is up to 10cm and thus it is progressively ahead of Yuzu N°3 with an average of 6cm.
