  • A small tree with a spherical crown that grows significantly slower and remains smaller than the parent species.
    The shoots are strikingly purplish-red when sprouting, as are the young leaves.
    Later, the leaves turn a glossy dark green.
    In autumn, the leaves turn golden yellow to brownish yellow.
  • Male florals are creamy and showy. Female flowers are significantly shorter, green and inconspicuous.
  • The fruits (sweet chestnuts) are edible.
